Question Number: 23926Law 11 - Offside 9/13/2010RE: competitive Adult Don of St. Louis, Missouri USA asks...An offensive player has dribbled past the second to last defender and is breaking in on the goal. A second offensive player is trailing the first forward who has the ball. The goalie comes off his line to challenge the forward with the ball. The forward passes the ball by the goalie into open space and the second forward runs onto the ball and scores. Would the goal stand or would the second forward be ruled offside because there was not two defenders between him and the goal? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Don For a player to be in an offside position he must be nearer to his opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent. The key word in that statement is As the second offensive forward in your scenario is behind the ball when it is played by his team mate he is not in an offside position and so there is no offence. If he was ahead of the ball when it was played it would be offside
