Question Number: 23852Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 8/29/2010RE: rec Adult brian of shannon , co clare ireland asks...does the referee have to toss a coin to decide who plays which way in the first half? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol That is the method proscribed in the Laws. The winner of the coin toss decides which way to attack, and the other team gets the kickoff. However, if a coin is not available, the referee might substitute any other fair method of chance - one/two fingers held behind his back, red/yellow card on top, or even rock/paper/scissors.

View Referee Gary Voshol profileAnswer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Brian Yes a coin toss decides which way a team plays in the 1st half. The team that wins the toss decides what way to play while the team that loses the toss gets to kick off in the 1st half. For older players they will recall a time when the winner of the toss could either take the KO or decide which way to play. That is no longer the case.
