Question Number: 23641

Law 11 - Offside 7/8/2010

RE: Rec Under 15

Kent Smith of Menlo Park, CA United States asks...

This question is a follow up to question 23606

So if I understand correctly...

If Klose was even with or behind the ball and his teammate when the ball was played, Klose is not offside? Even though Klose was ahead of the 2nd to last defender when the ball was played?

Incidentally, a member of the USSF National Instructor Staff replied to my inquiry and indicated that the AR made a mistake.

Thanks!

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Kent
There are two ways that a player in the opponent's half would not be offside. One is where he is level with the 2nd last defender and the second is where he is behind the ball.
Even though Klose is ahead of the 2nd last defender IMO he is not ahead of the ball therefore not nearer to the opponent's goal line than the ball and that is not offside.
If you look at this video at frame 18/19 you will see that Klose is behind the ball and therefore the correct decision was made by the assistant referee and that was done without the benefit of video technology. From this video 100% definitely not offside

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

You understand correctly. Offside position requires that the attacker: (a) be in the opponent's half; (b) closer (to the opponent's goal line) than the second last defender; AND (c) closer than the ball.
