Question Number: 23500

Law 1- The Field 6/19/2010

RE: Adult

Chong Lim of Perth, Western Australia Australia asks...

In a corner kick, can the corner flag be removed for the kick to be taken?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Chong
No the corner flag may not be removed to take a corner kick. It can be centered if it is laying to one side and it is best to ask the referee to deal with that.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

The flag is not to be removed. Place the ball so that you can kick it. You have a yard either way from the corner.

If a flag is positioned incorrectly, you can ask the referee if it can be fixed.

Some flags tend to bend in the wind, or have springs at the bottom that are bent out of shape. If the flag cannot be restored to upright, too bad. Play it as it lies.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

No. If it is leaning into the field, it is permissible for a teammate to hold the flag upright while the kick is taken, but the flag may not be removed.
