Question Number: 23419Law 16 - Goal Kick 6/4/2010RE: Select Adult Dan Paolini of Eastampton, NJ USA asks...This question is a follow up to question 23407 >> A player cannot be offside DIRECTLY from a corner kick (or a goal kick or throw in). It is interesting to learn about the historical reasons. When you consider that one cannot be offside on a kick-off by law, I had just assumed that the corner kick was included to be consistent with each of the other restarts after the ball is out of play. Thank you again for the great discussions!.. Dan Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino Hey Dan. One can't be offside on a kick-off or a penalty kick not as a matter of Law, i.e. nowhere does the LOTG say one cannot be offside at either of these as it does concerning a goal kick, but because if set up properly, it's impossible for any attacking player to be in offside position when the ball is played. Don't forget that free kicks are also restarts after the ball is out of play, and there MAY be offside at the taking of any free kick. Dropped ball is also exempt because the ball is in play when it hits the ground, not when it's played. Very happy you have enjoyed our site!!!
