Question Number: 23328Law 13 - Free Kicks 5/18/2010RE: Competitive Under 19 DJ of Mankato, MN USA asks...My player had a free kick and the ball hit the crossbar, then came out 20 yards where he originally kicked from and he volleyed it back into the net. Should this have been a goal? It was allowed, but I thought another player had to touch it before he could strike the ball again. Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi DJ You are indeed correct. The goal should have been disallowed and the resart is an IDFK from where the player volleyed the ball. The player cannot touch a free kick again until it has been played/ touched by another player. Some times in the 'heat of a game' a simple matter such as this is overlooked due to a focus on other matters such as offside etc. Also some times when there is no appeal by the opponents the referee may have lost focus on what happened and who the actual taker of the FK was.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham It was a double touch violation, and the goal should have been disallowed. This is a good example of why the referee must focus on the identity (number/face/features) of the player actually taking the free kick.
