Question Number: 23152Law 11 - Offside 4/20/2010RE: Select Under 9 Barney James of Tulsa, OK USA asks...Our goalie fielded a ball and punted it down field. One of our forwards was onside at the kick and out ran the defender who was trying to play a header on the kick. His header went backwards towards his own goal and was fielded by our forward. All the other players except for their goalie we at the mid field mark behind the play. Are we offside? Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham Not offside. 1. The forward is not offside because he was onside when the ball was played by a teammate. 2. When the forward headed the ball, everyone who was even with the ball (e.g,., not closer to the opponent's goal than the ball) was in onside position. Offside position requires an attacker to be closer to the opposing goal than the second last defender AND the ball. Both.

View Referee Dennis Wickham profileAnswer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Barney This is not offside. The forward was in an onside position at the punt so any change after that while the ball is in the air is fine. The next touch is by an opponent so again there is no possibility of offside as the ball must be touched by a team mate to be considered for offside.
