Question Number: 23120

Law 11 - Offside 4/14/2010

RE: High School

steve of vancouver, british columbia canada asks...

What happens if a defender plays the ball back to his keeper and an attacking player is in an offside position and attacks the ball. Offside, no offside?

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Steve, as a referee, how can this be offside? Who last controlled and played the ball? The defender.

Law 11 requires that the ball be last touched or played by a TEAMMATE of the player in an offside position, which is missing here. No offside offense has been committed. The defense made a huge mistake. Oops.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Steve, it is NOT an offense to be in an offside position. When is offside judged? When the ball is touched or played by a TEAMMATE. What we have here is an opponent playing the ball. Thus, by definition, there can be no offside on the attackers

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Steve
FIFA has an excellent resource on offside on its web site.
On this page there is an Interactive Guide to Law 11.
http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/lawsofthegame.html
A player cannot be offside on a pass from an opponent.
