Question Number: 22117Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 9/30/2009RE: reec Adult liam mccartney of derry city, ireland asks...Which side picks head or tails in the toss at the start of the match, home or away? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol I give the visitors the choice as a courtesy. It really makes no difference. In fact, you could have a 2-headed coin and, as long as the captains didn't know, the toss would still be completely random.

View Referee Gary Voshol profileAnswer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Liam Purely at the discretion of the referee and nothing in the laws on this. Some referees ask the home captain to toss the coin and for the away team to call or vice versa. Some will toss the coin and ask the Home team captain to call or the Away team. I usually ask the away team to call the toss. Other times I might ask the captain who arrives in the centre circle first. I've never been asked about it as its a 50/50 decision one way or another. The winner of the toss can now only decide the direction to play.
