Question Number: 21572

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 6/20/2009

RE: USSF 8 High School

Andy of RPV, CA USA asks...

I have a question about kick-off. According the rules the kick-off has to be a KICK forward. Is the topping(I mean rolling the ball with the klits)the ball forward correct?

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Rolling the ball forward is fine as long as the ball is not dragged backwards in the same movement. In other words it's ok to roll the ball forwards to a teammate.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

The text book answer is the balled needs to be 'kicked' and move forward. The USSF Advice To Referees has varied on what is kicking, but now accepts this. On the field, rolling/dragging the ball has been trifling and properly ignored so long as the ball moves forward.
