Law 10 - Method of Scoring 6/9/2009

RE: Select Under 16

Jakob O'Meara-Gil of Balnarring Beach, VIC Australia asks...

hi mate
Recently in a game i decided to shoot directly from the kick off without anyone touching the ball first.
The ref called me back and said that it must go forward then back, but i could have sworn i was right on this :)
So are you allowed to shoot directly from kick off?
thanks, Jakob

Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino

Absolutely you can shoot from a kick-off and if you score it counts too!

Yes you can. Referee error. Here's directly from The Laws Of The Game:

A goal may be scored directly from the kick-off.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Yes you can shoot at the opposition's goal at a kick off. I am forever dumbfounded at the things some referees invent as part of the game. You got some power if you can score from there should try for NFL field goal duties!

Betcha that ref doesn't know you are allowed to score directly from a goal kick either. Shame - both kicks were made direct way back in 1997.
