Question Number: 21157Other 4/20/2009RE: Select Youth, Adult Amateur, High School Other Patrick Faulds of Columbia, SC USA asks...This question is a follow up to question 21138 This is a comment rather than a question. I visit this site DAILY, and cannot express how much reviewing the questions and reading the different answers from this diverse panel improves my confidence on the pitch, even though I am an "old" referee and former player and college coach. Sometimes, however, it is the most simple and obvious piece of advice that rings true in my head, and I know that I have another gem to share with my colleagues and pass along to the younger "up and comers" that I work with. "Be sure to keep heading into the call if you make it from distance, as you blow the whistle so when you finish you are at the point of the foul or misconduct." I consider this quote from Richard Dawson in his advice on how to referee a solo match (Q#21138) to be as brilliant as it is simple. I always tell my ARs during pre-game to keep up with play and always be in position to help "sell the call". There have been times, however, that as a referee I have found myself making a call when I was further away from play than I would like to be. (Solo referee, a quick long clearance, quickly checking on a player slow to get up from a good hard tackle) Even though I may have seen the play clearly, it is often difficult to "sell the call" when my proximity is in question. I assure you that I will be adding Mr. Dawsons gem to my arsenal from now on. Thanks again to one and all! Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino Richard certainly does have his moments!! His experience and his sharing his tidbits of wisdom have helped all of us over the years. So glad you enjoy our site and appreciate the thought Richard puts into his answers.

Although the word *brilliant* was briefly an aww shucks ego head expanding moment I thank you for the kind words. We all here on this site have a decent grasp of the game and we are all glad to share it with those who take the time to read! Cheers
