Question Number: 20393Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 10/28/2008RE: AYSO REC Under 11 Ian Bishop of Upland, CA USA asks...At a kick-off, the rules state the ball must move forward - does moving sideways along the line, count as forward motion (which could theoretically include forward motion up to the width of the line) or must the ball clear the line to be considered forward motion? Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino Forward means forward. If the ball is kicked and moves any quantifiable distance toward the opponent's goal line then it's moved forward, otherwise no.

View Referee Steve Montanino profileAnswer provided by Referee Keith Contarino Sideways is not forwards. Forwards means what it says, Make them take the kick over at this age group until they get it right. At older age groups you may want to view it as trifling and not make an issue out of it
