Question Number: 20013

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 9/20/2008

RE: Under 15

Sam of Burnaby, B.C. Canada asks...

During the taking of a dropped ball,
how far must the other players stand
from the ball?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Far enough so that the referee has room to drop the ball between them, and so they won't kick each other or the ref.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Sam in point of fact
LAW 8 ? THE START AND RESTART OF PLAY
Dropped Ball
Any player may challenge for the ball (including the goalkeeper). There is no minimum or maximum number of players required to contest a dropped ball. The referee cannot decide who may or may not contest a dropped ball. Those players participating must allow the ball to strike the ground
The ball is dropped again:
? if it is touched by a player before it makes contact with the ground
? if the ball leaves the field of play after it makes contact with the
ground, without a player touching it
If the ball is repeatedly being struck before it strikes the ground caution show yellow card for delaying the restart of play may begin to appear as a possible solution.
Cheers
