Question Number: 19978Law 10 - Method of Scoring 9/17/2008RE: Rec Under 15 Cameron of Palmdale, CALIF USA asks...A defender tries to clear the ball from his goal area and the ball hits the referee and goes into his own goal. Or a defender deliberate backpass towards his GK and the ball deflects off the ref and goes into his own goal.What is the call for each situation? Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney Goal. We'll restart with a kickoff.
The referee is considered as part of the field. If the ball hits her and bounces into the goal, it's a goal, just as if it had hit a bump on the field or a high clump of grass.
Moral of that story: Aiming at the referee can have dire consequences!

View Referee Michelle Maloney profileAnswer provided by Referee Gary Voshol The only time this would not be a goal is on a restart taken by the defending team. All restarts are indirect for the team taking the restart; a bounce off the referee doesn't change that.
