Question Number: 19736

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 8/12/2008

RE: rec Under 6

Nikki Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio US asks...

If there is an injury, how and where is play resumed?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

At the u -6 littles we are hopefully at 3 aside where injuries require a pick up and hug by the coach or surrounding parents. In regulation FIFA if play is stopped for an injury only, the restart is a dropped ball from where the ball was unless the ball is located in a goal area where it can never be closer than 6 yards to the goal line . If play is already stopped and the injury is then dealt with play resumes with why play was originally stopped. Apparantly in USA highschool if play is stopped solely for an injury only, it is an indfk for the team that had ball possession at the point of where the ball was when play is stopped!
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

It depends. If play was not stopped for the injury, then the restart will be according to why play stopped: an infraction/violation of the Laws; a throw-in, goal kick, corner kick or kick-off, etc.

If play was stopped for the injury, then the restart is a dropped ball wherever the ball was located when play was whistled dead, unless it was in the goal area, in which case the ball is dropped on the top of the goal area line closest to where it was when play was stopped.

With the wee littles, there are lots of injury stoppages! Not because the kids need them, but because the parents do...
