Question Number: 19616

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 7/16/2008

RE: Varsity High School

Riley Carlson of Plainfield, Vermont USA asks...

According to official NFHS rules, how many offensive players can be in the center circle to start the game?

Also, would a 'flying V' maneuver (a la the mighty ducks movies) be legal?

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

There are no restrictions on the number of players in the center circle, just they must be in their own half of the field.

Imagination being stifled a bit there Riley? Taking Hollywood versions of anything is just plain ridiculous from the outset especially since their need is to sell movies not be correct in what those movies portray. Your idea has merit right up until the time any player who is not playing the ball touches an opponent. That's when things stop and the ball goes over to them for a direct free kick. If you want to play a flying 'V' play gridiron football. Of course that involves wearing armor plate and patting each other on the backside when standing in a circle telling secrets...

Regards,

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

There can be up to 11 player in the center circle on a kick off. They all need to stand in their respective half. The V formation would be legal provided all other requierments of the laws of the game are met.
