Question Number: 19185

Law 10 - Method of Scoring 5/23/2008

RE: C-3 Adult

John Casserly of Peterborough, Ontario Canada asks...

On a corner kick the ball strikes only a defender and deflects into the net. Who is awarded the goal? The person who took the corner kick, as they were the last offensive player to touch the ball, or I have heard that the goal goes to the defensive player and there is a code indicating she/he scorded on their own goal.

Thanks
John

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

The team opposite that defending the goal. I write in my notebook the last player to touch it and circle the name or number to indicate own goal so that my match report will be correct.

Regards,

Answer provided by Referee Gene Nagy

John, there is a fine line in defining what is an own goal and what was just a slight deflection. In a corner kick, I cannot imagine where it would NOT be an own goal. Technically speaking, the referee really only has to report how many goals were scored and into which net but not by which player. True enough competition rules may ask you to record the goal scorers and in this case I would say own goal.
