Question Number: 18798

Law 6 - Assistant Referee 4/16/2008

RE: Under 15

Alex of Sydney, NSW Australia asks...

Can i assistant referee a club match with a cast on my left arm.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

For me as referee, I don't want an assistant who is unable to keep up with the last but one defender or the ball whichever is nearer the goal line. I would rather have an assistant who is capable of signalling using both hands because there are times the assistant must use a "correct" hand when signalling.

You should notify your assignor of your unavailability during your recovery.

Regards,

Not a great idea but does the cast require a sling? If you can stil run to keep up with play, have use of the hand and your doctor says the actions will not hurt your recovery otherwise best take some recovery time !
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

Probably not! Although I have seen referees officiate that have only 1 arm or no arms. We have a referee in WI that has no arms. He only takes the referee position though and never the AR position. I have AR's for him a few times and of course, I have extra duties in that match to compensate for his disability.
