what does it mean when the assistant referee raises his flag straight up in the air?

how far is the penalty kick mark from the goal line?

If the flag is straight up in the air it means he wants the attention of the center referee. If he keeps it straight up in the air, it's a signal for offside. 12 yards on a regulation sized field.

The penalty mark is 12 yds from the goal line. If the AR pops the flag up, then he wants the referees attention. If the flag went straight up in the air with no waive, then the AR is calling offside.

During play a flag straight up is a signal to stop play, when play is stopped the flag up is trying to get the referee's attention.
