Question Number: 18557

Law 10 - Method of Scoring 3/17/2008

RE: Competitive Adult

Omid of Ottawa, Ontario Canada asks...

Hi,

I have a Referee's manual book written by Mr. Ager a few years back. In it, he says that a goalie can throw the ball from his or her own penalty area into the opponents goal and a goal will be awarded.

Is this still allowed in 2008? I could not find anything in the Laws of the game 2007 booklet that says otherwise.

please respond.

Thanks a lot,

Omid

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

That is the case. If the goalkeeper has a strong enough arm, and distracted enough opponents, he could score a goal by throwing the ball the length of the field.

A goalkeeper grabbing the ball is not a stoppage in play, so there is no possibility of his throw being considered "indirect".

Quite legal and we could be reasonably sure the NFL would be considering him for a quarterback contract with an arm like that!
Cheers
