Question Number: 18001

Law 10 - Method of Scoring 11/26/2007

RE: Semi pro Adult

Steevn Gill of Barrow in Furness, Cumbria England asks...

On a very windy day, the goalkeeper caught the ball from a shot and ran to the edge of the box and threw the ball to his forwards. The ball got caught in the wind and bounced infront of the opposing keeper and over his head and into the goal. My question is what's the outcome? A goal? If not how do you restart the game?

The ref didnt know and said that he cant give the goal and will read the laws when he get home and ended up giving a drop ball in the middle of the field. Very strange dont you think?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Yes, truly very strange because the ref should have known that the ball was never out of play and the goal counted. The keeper collecting the ball and distributing it again by punt or throw is not a restart.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Why in Heaven's name would the referee NOT award a goal? The ball never went out of play. The keeper threw the ball from one end of the field to the other which while admirable is certainly also legal. Restart with a kick off for the opponents.

Well done to one goalkeeper. Not so well done for the other goalkeeper and referee.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

It was a good goal improperly denied by the referee. As an oops it is a misapplication of law and could be protested. Most likely this will be a learning experiance that those who see it will now know to award the goal the next time it occurs!
Cheers
