Question Number: 16947

Law 10 - Method of Scoring 9/27/2007

RE: High School

Mary of Franklin, TN USA asks...

Player A is tripped up in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Player B takes the PK and scores. Does Player A get credited with an assist?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Mary, if it pleases you or makes the player feel good go ahead and award it. Soccer is a team game all contribute and as to the stats referees let the statictians decide. As a coach I seek to praise any time anyone does something good! Effort and application of the skills and tactics we practice is what is I demand from players. The game is played for fun, if awarding a stat makes it a happier player I am all for it!
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Although I don't care as a referee who gets credited with what, how could getting fouled possibly result in an assist?
