Law 9 - The Ball in and out of Play 9/21/2007

RE: rec Under 12

guy chatfield of cornwall-on-hudson, new york u.s.a. asks...

if the ball is kicked down the side lines in the air and flies out of bounds and curves back in bounds before the ball lands on the ground is the ball in or out?
thanks

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Ball is out of play if the AR or referee percieves the entire ball is no longer overhead of the 5 inch line but completely outside into touch! Somebody gets a throw in! Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

The ball is OUT of play. The AR will raise his flag and point in a 45 degree angle in the direction the throw is to go to signal that the ball had gone out of play on his touchline

Methinks you answered your own question when you said "and flies out of bounds and curves back in", yes? Out is out, whether in the air or on the ground.
