Question Number: 16691Pre-Game 9/14/2007RE: Under 14 Dave of Portland, OR USA asks...I'm studying my FIFA rulebook and there are many places where information is followed by an asterisk and it says "see page 3" but I can't figure out WHAT they are referring to on page 3. For example "If the ball bursts...the match is restarted... where the first ball became defective* (see page 3)"

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol It's refering to the fact that there are special locations for restarts when the incident happens inside the goal area. No inbound free kicks (indirect, of course) may be taken from that spot - the ball is moved out to the 6-yard line, the long outer edge of the goal area. The same applies to dropped balls.
Outbound kicks for incidents that happen in the goal area may be taken from anywhere inside the goal area. I tell players to place the ball, "Just like a goal kick."
The asterisk is explained somewhere in the book, I think in the early pages where they also explain the vertical line in the margin that indicates new information.
