Question Number: 16559Law 6 - Assistant Referee 9/5/2007RE: Rec. Under 13 Todd Royer of Elk Grove , Ca. Sacramento asks...My son just took a class to become a referee and he is 12. I wanted to confirm to him something for him before he ref's his first game. My question is this. When a team kicks the ball out of bounds in which direction does he point the flag? Does he point it in the direction that the team throwing it in is trying to score a goal? Answer provided by Referee Steve Montanino He should point in the direction the team taking the throw-in is attacking.

View Referee Ben Mueller profileAnswer provided by Referee Keith Contarino Depends upon where the ball went out of bounds. If over the touch line then he should hold his flag at an upwards 45 degree angle in the direction the team taking the throw will be attacking. If the ball went over the goal line and scored a goal, he should turn towards the center line and run for 5-10 yards. If a corner kick is to be awarded he should point his flag down towards the flag at the corner arc. If a goal kick is to be awarded he is to point towards the penalty area with his flag level. Wish him good luck from all of us!!
