Question Number: 15378

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 5/4/2007

RE: Modify High School

Dennis Malles of Poughkeepsie, NY Dutchess asks...

After an injury stopage (play stopped, goalie injuried in box). How is play restarted?

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

If play is stopped solely for an injury, play is restarted with a dropped ball. Keep in mind there is no requirement for ANYONE to participate in a dropped ball. My mistake. I didn't notice this was US High SChool who make their own rules up as they go along.

That is, EXCEPT in America when being forced to play using NFHS High School rules [Not Laws of the Game] where it is specified one player from each team MUST participate. It seems NFHS has ruled against sportsmanship as well.

Sorry,

Under NFHS rules, if one of the teams is "in control" of the ball at the time of the injury stoppage, the restart is an indirect kick for their team.

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

In US High School the referee can award an IFK if a team was in control of the ball at the stoppage.
