Question Number: 14809

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 2/6/2007

RE: non Other

julia of longbeach, ca. U.S.A. asks...

When the ball is out of bounce how do you play from there what play do you start with?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Out of bounce? Get a new ball that bounces, and restart with a dropped ball, if you stopped play to deal with the flat ball.

I suspect you may mean "out of bounds", off the field? In that case, it depends on which line the ball went over, and who touched it last. If it went over a side line, play will be restarted with a throw-in, taken by the opponent of the team that touched it last. If it goes over the end line, it will be a goal kick (if touched by the attackers last) or a corner kick (if touched by the defenders last) - or a kickoff, if a goal was scored.

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

When the whole ball leaves the whole touchline..throw in to the team that did not touch ball last

When the whole ball crosses the whole goal line and does not enter goal and is last touched by attackers...goal kick

If it leaves the goal line and last touches defenders...corner kick.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Julia; I can only assume you mean one of 2 things, 1. After the ball is out of BOUNDS, the restart is commensurate with why it went out of bounds. Kick-off, goal kick, corner kick, throw-in, or, possibly 2. After the keeper has bounced the ball for more than 6 seconds, you would restart with an indirect free kick to the opponents where the keeper was bouncing the ball unless he was inside his goal area than the ball would come out to the 6 yard line.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

When the ball crosses a field boundary there are only four restarts possible, throw-in, goal kick, corner kick or kick off.
