Question Number: 14491

Character, Attitude and Control 11/21/2006

RE: Select Under 11

Rob McAuley of Irvine, CA USA asks...

Great website - Here's my question:
AYSO N2 Ref states is a report that he "ejected" both a Head Coach & a parent after a post-game discussion. We all know that this is allowable under the LOTG. However, Coach & parent state that they were not informed at the time & Ref now states that he did not tell them that they were ejected. No witness heard any comment by Ref such as "you are ejected, etc"
So - did an ejection realy take place or did Ref maybe decide later that the language abuse was "ejection worthy".
Refs report states - "I ejected them because of abusive language".... but nobody was told ?????
So - was there an ejection or not ?
I say no.
Thks

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

The referee needs to include all details in report. If he ejected someone whether it be a coach or parent and they did not leave, he should never have resumed match. Thus I will assume the referee never asked them to leave. If he includes a detailed report the league should take care of it.

On behalf of the panel members and the creators of the site we do appreciate the kind words.
If the game is over there and harsh words then exchanged there is no ejection only a report of misconduct activity that the referee felt was abusive or threatening . Depending on league policy which is not the referee's issue who can say what discipline is to be metted out? Cheers

Thanks appreciated, we do try to help out when we can. There is no need to advise anyone their name is being mention in an unfavorable manner in the referee's match report. This is especially true when what happens is after the match and in taking time to advise whoever what's going to happen the referee places himself in the path of further maltreatment or harm.

All the referee need do is extricate himself from the situation, thereby ending it, and file his report. Once the report is read and acted on the guilty parties are advised of the decision taken by the disciplinary committee. The participants paid the price of the ticket and now comes the ride. Lesson, right or wrong, the referee is right and it does no one any good to belabor the point.

Regards,

You are incorrect as to the LOTG allowing the ejection of a parent. Where is that stated? The referee has NO authority at all over spectators unless they come onto the field of play and even then he can only ask them to leave the field. A referee may tell a coach to have a parent removed but the referee cannot force the parent to go. He can only refuse to restart the game until the parent has left. Law 3 gives us authority over coaches but not parents.
