Question Number: 14326

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 10/31/2006

RE: Competive Adult

Julius of Johannesburg, South Africa South Africa asks...

It was a beginning of the second half of the extra-time and both team were changing their sides, both team were in their halves except their goalkeepers who were still moving towards their respective poles. The referee signal the start of the game while the other goalkepper was not even within the 18 area box. That team that started the game just score the goal directly from the centre line and the goal was allowed to stand.

In term of the soccer rules is this allowed???

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

The referee should wait until all players are on their appropriate side to signal for the kick. The referee should also make eye contact with AR's and keepers before signaling for the kick. Referee made a mistake by signalling when keeper were not ready.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Yes a mistake was made, but why? Had this keeper continually delayed things during the match? Had this keeper's side been a thorn in the referees match? These things would tend to make most humans act in this way.

Regards,
