On the kick off can the ball initially be sent backwards or must it go forward before being directed up field

The ball is in play when it is kicked and moved forward. Two free kicks are like this: kick-off and penalty kick.

Must go forward or its a rekick.

The ball must be kicked and moved forwards. Only the kick off and penalty kick require the ball to move forward. Any other free kick and the ball is in ply when it is kicked and moves escept when coming out of the penalty area in which case it has to clear the penalty area.
