Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino Doesn't have to hit the ground or any player. a goal may be scored directly from a kick off

Just last month a player in the University of North Carolina (UNC) women's team scored the fastest goal in the NCAA (under 4 seconds into the match) by kicking it in from the kick off. It tipped off the keepers fingers, and went into the back of the net. The UNC athletics have the film on their webpage.
