Question Number: 13991Law 11 - Offside 9/30/2006RE: Rec Adult Bryan Snyder of Green Bay, WI USA asks...We were watching a game where a player threw the ball from the touchline towards the attacking goal. He had a player who was in an off side position. My understanding is you can not be offsides on a throw-in. As the ball was flying through the air, it bounced off of a defensive player. It then went to the offensive player. The referee called an offside. Is this correct? Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino No it is not. Even if the opponent had controlled the ball it would only negate the offside. The law says that a player cannot be penalized if he receives the ball directly from a throw-in. Since touching by an opponent can never cause an offside, it is just common sense that the Law is so worded to mean that if the ball touches a teammate on the way from a throw-in, then offside is reset.

He could, too, not understand when to judge offside, the moment the ball touches or is played by a member of the attacking side...
