Question Number: 13123

Law 6 - Assistant Referee 6/21/2006

RE: High School

Dean of Madison, Alabama USA asks...

I was looking at the referee assignments for some of the world cup matches. I noticed that they use a 5th official.
What does he do?

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Dean, t
the 5th official is a FIFA AR in reserve in case either of the two ARS working the Match are injured or removed. The 4th official is in fact a FIFA referee who would step in if the referee in the match was injured or removed! I do not know if the 5th official has any specific duties to take notes or help the 4th in some manner? I will try and find out if there additional responsibilities other than being held in reserve! Cheers
