Question Number: 12801

Law 10 - Method of Scoring 5/15/2006

RE: rec / travel Under 14

kyle smith of charlevoix, mi usa asks...

My question is can you score a goal on yourself?

Situation - the defensive team kicks the ball into their own goal. Is it a goal or a corner kick?

Answer provided by Referee Ben Mueller

You can score a goal on yourself as long as it was NOT from a free kick.

If a free kick is kicked into a teams own goal without touching anyone, the restart is a corner kick unless the kick was taken inside the penalty area. If a free kick inside the penalty area is kicked into a teams own goal and the ball never left the penalty area, then it is a rekick. Ball must leave P.A. to be in play. Throw ins are the same way. The ball must touch someone. If you throw it into your own goal, then the restart is a corner kick.

As Always,

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

From dynamic play in your net or theirs is a goal scored. From a restart of play into yours is always a corner. Into theirs from a direct free kick, a penalty kick, a goal kick, a kick-off or a corner kick is a goal from the other restarts is a goal kick. If the football touches another player on the way into a goal all restrictions are lifted as this is now dynamic play.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

You cannot score on yourself at any RESTART. You certainly may kick or head the ball into your own goal accidently and the goal would count. What we call an "own goal".
