Question Number: 12797Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 5/14/2006RE: Rec Under 13 Charles Osborn of Fairfax, VA USA asks...My question is on restarts. The center referee called an offsides against my opponent that was not. Once he turned and saw the other defender, who was the second to last defender that was nearer to the goal than the player called for offsides, he corrected his call. The restart he chose was an indirect free kick. Shouldn't the restart have been a dropped ball? Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino The referee stopped play for what he thought was an offside violation. He realized it wasn't. The only posiible restart for this is a dropped ball.

The referee may elect to just ignore the defender playing everyone onside and give indirect free kick to the defense -- that's close enough and can be sold ONCE even though wrong. He must pay attention more in future.
Regards,
