Question Number: 12562

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 4/15/2006

RE: competative Adult

paul jones of cardigan, ceredigion wales uk asks...

In a recent cup game, where the wind was the leveller the game ended 3-3 so we were about to go into extra time, before tossing the coin for extra time,we decided to continue playing with the wind, so as both teams walked back onto the pitch our opposing team lined up with the wind, then we tossed the coin, which we won and decided to turn the teams around and line up with the wind, the ref said no and we should stay as we are, the toss as far as the ref was concerned only determined who kicked off, Ive been playing for 25 years and this is the 1st time Ive come across this rule, Any Ideas please, by the way we lost the game and i put it down to that decision.

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Law 8 - The Start and Restart of Play affords the winner of the coin toss only a choice of ends. This referee has applied the Law incorrectly.

I take it this was sudden death? By Fifa law 2 equal overtime periods must be played.
Ref Fleischer is spot on the coin toss determines who CHOOSES the half, the loser gets kick off!
Cheers
