Question Number: 12513

Law 8 - Start and Restart of Play 4/8/2006

RE: rec Under 11

Robert Reheil of Bensalem, PA United States asks...

Can a player of the team that has first tap kick the ball forward into the goal and get the point because i have a kid that has come close in the middle of the game and I thought to get a quick point that I would have him do that

Answer provided by Referee Chuck Fleischer

Go for it, a goal scored directly from a kick off counts way more than you think. It has an intimidation value that will force defenders back at every free kick. Keeps opposing goalkeepers honest too. They are reluctant to leave their line for a while and this provides more depth to any attack.

Regards,

You can score directly from a kickoff. That Law changed a couple of years back. If you have a player who can do it, great for you!!!

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

If you are talking about a kick off from centre, if there is a leg mighty enough to have a go it makes for great conversation and is perfectly legal to score!

The kick offs only criteria is the ball move forward. If you can get it into the opposing goal so much the better!

It is in fact a form of a DFK (direct free kick) . ALL DFKs have the same onetime scoring ability from the initial kick. ONLY INDFKs (indirect free kicks) REQUIRE a second touch of the ball to legally score. Cheers
