RE: Rec Adult

Russell of Sydney, Australia asks...

This question is a follow up to question 33900

I don't even believe what I was saying is a pre planned approach - as I'm sure it is not the case - but thinking about it at least passes time on the boring morning commute !!
Not for a second do I really think it is set up like that with any pre planning of tactics to deflect.

If VAR has proved anything, it is that humans are human. Errors happen. Mistakes happen. Totally not seeing an incident happens.
Equally, make the right call happens. Seeing what other people or camera don't - happens.

Who'd be a Ref !

Four weeks to our grass roots footy starts a new season - and I'm itching to get going yet again.

Answer provided by Referee Richard Dawson

Hi Russell,
well we at the grassroots do not have to worry about VAR, an unsolicited video or too maybe! lol I think the cold calculated milli measurement of offside is the worst problem for VAR second to handling which no matter what decision is taken its going to cause contentious issues. I like the off the ball gotcha for crap & misconduct not associated with true play that creates real time fouls not post game review punishment. A referee with integrity sees what he sees! Good position training & effort help him or her see better!
Cheers

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Russell
Good for you. Always great when the new season comes around.
We live in a world that everything has to be instant, has to be changed, no room for being human error.
I personally think that VAR has made some improvements yet the problems have taken center stage.
I wonder when a PL Pro referee looks at a decision again where there has been VAR involvement and what he must thinking to himself when it is *wrong* ? Throw in some good old human nature and it would be nice to be a fly on the wall on some review meetings!
