At least in our area, the gridiron football uprights can be pivoted 180º, so they are not anywhere near the soccer crossbar. Others should check into this option.

I now carry a roll of rope in my ref bag, so it can be be used as a pulling device.

This is a good point. Many football goal posts are now made with hinges and rotate.

However, the cost of hinged goals posts may be a factor, especially for small schools and recreation fields. For example, permanent unhinged goal posts average about $3500 a pair while the hinged goal posts average $9500 a pair.

Official associations may request that permanent unhinged goal posts be replaced by the hinged ones so that there is no interference during the soccer game.

Hi Barry
Like you I used to do all sorts to ensure that matters got sorted before games.
As I got older those interventions started to wane in the main due to concern about responsibility.
Most times I now tell the home team to sort the matter to my satisfaction. Should anything untoward happen the *responsibility* can get redirected when it needs to be explained what happened!
